چکیده

[1] The great 2011 Tohoku‐oki earthquake (Mw 9.0) and its 339 foreshocks and 5,609 aftershocks (9–27 March 2011) were relocated using a three‐dimensional seismic velocity model and local P and S wave arrival times. The distribution of relocated hypocenters was compared with a tomographic image of the Northeast Japan forearc. The comparison indicates that the rupture nucleation of the largest events in the Tohoku‐oki sequence, including the mainshock, was controlled by structural heterogeneities in the megathrust zone. Effects of subducted seamounts on megathrust earthquake nucleation and rupture propagation

[1] Subducted seamounts have been linked to interplate earthquakes, but their specific effects on earthquake mechanism remain controversial. A key question is under what conditions a subducted seamount will generate or stop megathrust earthquakes. Here we show results from numerical experiments in the framework of rateand state-dependent friction law in which a seamount is characterized as a pa...

Splay Faults in the Makran Subduction Zone and Changes of their Transferred Coulomb Stress

The Makran subduction zone in northeast and the Sumatra subduction zone (Sunda) in the west have been known as tsunamigenic zones of the Indian Ocean. The 990 km long Makran subduction zone is located offshore of Iran, Pakistan and Oman. Similar to many subduction zones all over the world, the Makran accretionary prism is associated with an imbricate of thrust faults across the zone, which may ...

Depth-varying rupture properties of subduction zone megathrust faults

[1] Subduction zone plate boundary megathrust faults accommodate relative plate motions with spatially varying sliding behavior. The 2004 Sumatra-Andaman (Mw 9.2), 2010 Chile (Mw 8.8), and 2011 Tohoku (Mw 9.0) great earthquakes had similar depth variations in seismic wave radiation across their wide rupture zones – coherent teleseismic short-period radiation preferentially emanated from the dee...

Structural evidence on strike slip Kinematic inversion of the Kushk-e-Nosrat Fault zone, Central Iran

NW-tending faults in Central Iran are expected to represent dominant dextral components due to their orientation with respect to the northward motion of the Arabian Plate with respect to Eurasia. However, previously published works, as well as the focal mechanism solution of the area's earthquakes, indicate evidence of sinistral kinematic along the major faults in Central Iran. Here we present ...

Compressive sensing of frequency-dependent seismic radiation from subduction zone megathrust ruptures

Megathrust earthquakes rupture a broad zone of the subducting plate interface in both along-strike and along-dip directions. The along-dip rupture characteristics of megathrust events, e.g., their slip and energy radiation distribution, reflect depth-varying frictional properties of the slab interface. Here, we report high-resolution frequency-dependent seismic radiation of the four largest meg...
